Welcome to our second character interview! Today we have the star of Fence Jumpers, Skyler. I figured since he's the main character, he ought to have an interview too. So enjoy meeting Skyler and getting to know him a bit more!
*Skyler enters, looking sharp in clean jeans and a dark hoodie and sneakers. He sits down, shaking his brown hair out of his face.*
Welcome, Skyler. It's awesome to have you here. Tell us a bit about yourself.
S: Tell you about myself? Like what? Um... well, I'm Skyler Pelton, and I'm fourteen-years-old. I have an older sister named Hannah. I go to school - well, no, I went to school, before Hannah and I ran away from home. We and our parents live in Cincinnati, Ohio province.
Why'd you run away?
S: Because... because my parents were going to give me to people who worked for the government. They would have given me up, and they wouldn't have visited, and just forget me. They were going to give me to the government, who would've turned me into... into a cyborg. Hannah woke me up that night and we escaped through her bedroom window. Then we lived on the streets for a while before we lived with the Fence Jumpers.
Surely if they'd known, they wouldn't have agreed to that? They didn't know why they wanted you.
S: I know. Nobody knew why they wanted me. But... they're my parents. I know it's not their fault, and they didn't know, but... they agreed to just forget about me. I know they wouldn't have given me to them if they had known. But Hannah said they where being threatened. Even if they didn't agree, I would have to go anyway, to keep them safe.
I'm sorry that all happened, but I'm glad it didn't come to you giving yourself up. That would have been hard on everyone.
S: I know, but it would have kept them safe. Hannah and I were lucky to find the Jumpers. Our parents are okay, and so are we.
Indeed. What were your initial thoughts about the Jumpers?
S: I thought it was pretty cool. I'd only heard a little bit about them, but they sounded like fun people. And they are. Most of them, anyway. Some are kind of mean, but everyone's mostly pretty nice.
Besides being a terrible rascal to the city as a Jumper, what else are you interested in? Any sports or hobbies?
S: *laughs* I like reading. Adventures, mostly. Before we ran away I liked playing a computer game with my friends from school. We played almost every day. I want to try skateboarding, but I don't have a board yet. I know some of the Jumpers do, though. I wanted to try learning from them, before everything went really crazy and we lost everything...
That sounds like fun, skateboarding. Are there any Jumpers you're pretty close with?
S: Jonah. He's pretty cool. He's my age, and we have fun exploring the tunnels. Grace has been a really nice friend, too. She's taught Hannah and me a of about climbing over fences. And there's Cody... *hesitates* I was friends with Cody... until he was killed...
I'm so sorry... I've heard you've been quite a brave Jumper recently. You've had some run-ins with the Nabbers, haven't you? I know they found a way into your hideout?
S: Seems like every other day, but yeah. I don't think I'd call myself brave, just reckless. Seems to be a Jumper trait sometimes, but I've always had Cody or Wes or someone to help... But after that, when Claire told the Nabbers where we lived, and a lot of us were captured and the rest of us had nowhere else to go, it was hard to be brave... Really hard now that Cody's....
But you've still been pretty brave, even when it gets scary. You jumped off a moving train!
S: *rolls eyes* Yeah, and I also nearly knocked myself unconscious doing it. I don't want to jump off a train again if I don't have to. It's not as cool as movies make it look.
Fine. Tell us about your family. Where do your parents work?
S: Dad works with the government as... uh, something to do with funding, I think. He helps organize ways to fund projects for the other departments. Mom is a teacher for the grade beneath mine. She does math, and she's really good at it. Hannah and I are horrible, so she's helped us a lot. Hannah's my older sister by two years, but we've always been pretty close. Especially after we ran away, she's always looked out for me. We've lived in Cincinnati all my life, but Hannah says we used to live in Virginia province before Dad got his job with the government.
Do you go to a school in the city? Or are you homeschooled?
S: I go to a school. It's alright. I like the friends I had there, and the teachers were pretty nice. There were a few bullies, but a guy named Zachary told me who they were so I could avoid them. He's... I think he's sixteen, and he always helped out the new kids and stood up to the bullies, even when most of them were taller than he was.
Did you ever have a crush? Or did Hannah?
S: *looks embarrassed* What? No, I didn't. Well... maybe, but that's not important. Hannah never had a boyfriend, and she never told me if she had a crush, but some of the guys liked her. She was popular with a lot of the kids in our school. She was like Zach, too, always helping the younger kids.
Come on, you have to tell us about your crush! You can't leave us hanging like that!
S: Do I have to? *sighs* Fine. Her name was Alice. She's my age, and she was always moving and always had lots of energy. I was eleven then, and she helped me with my history homework once, and... I thought she was the greatest thing ever. But I was always too nervous to tell her. She had a boyfriend once, and I felt jealous, but her boyfriend didn't stay with her long. I still never was brave enough to tell her I liked her.
Aww, that's adorable. Is there any girl among the Jumpers who's caught your eye?
S: *face goes red* Not really... Grace is cool, but I don't know where she is. She's always been nice to me, and Hannah. Grace was one of the first Jumpers I met. She decided to go away from us because she was being tracked, but she's a good Jumper, so I'm sure she'll be fine. *tone sounds as if he's trying to convince himself more than assuring others*
I'm sure she will. Can you tell us what you plan to do back in the city?
S: Not really. I'm just playing it by ear. We need to find the others, and rescue them. That's about as far as plans go, I guess. My plan went as far as jumping off the train.
I see. Okay, last two questions: What is your favorite animal, and if you could spend a week anywhere in the world, where would it be?
S: Animal... A koala, I think. *pauses thoughtfully* New York City, in New York province. From what I've heard it sounds amazing and huge.
Awesome! Well, thank you very much for be willing to do this interview, Skyler. I enjoyed it, and I hope readers did too. Good luck on finding your friends.
S: *nods, smiling a bit* Thanks. And thanks for having me. I enjoyed it.
